Been lurking for a while. Lot of good info here. Carved out a new system. Not to beat this to death, but wanted an opinion. I checked for maximum compatibility.
Gigabyte GA-M59 nforce590 SLI Mobo
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600 Socket AM2
Corsair XMS2 6400 DDR2 RAM (2x1GB)
PC Power and Cooling Silent 700W (60A 12v rail)SLI certified PSU
EVGA Nvidia GeForce 7950 GX2 x1
Gigabyte 3D Aurora FT case.
Zalman 9500 HSF
WD 160GB SATA2 16MB Cache 7200rpm HDD x2

I checked mobo, RAM and GPU compatibilities and there doesnt appear to be conflicts.
Thanks. This is a great site.

1) Downgrade CPU to a 3800+ (or 4200+)- save the money now and get a 65nm CPU in December.
2) 700W PSU is a little overkill, but thats a nice system
3) Make sure the RAM is CAS4.
4) Do not even think about quad SLI or with DX10 coming. I would actually downgrade the video card to a X1800/1900XT and spend the money on a DX10 card w/ Vista.

Thanks for the reply.
I couldnt decide on the GPU and didnt want to drop 450 on a GTX or buy 2 GT's. The 700W is a little overkill, but from what Ive heard about DX10's and the cards that are going to run it, I'll probably need the power.
Corsair is CAS4.

I agree. The 7950 GX2 is WAY past the point of diminishing return for video cards at the moment. Get a little less powerful GPU for a lot less money. I know, I know, the 7950 GX2 is the end-all be-all right now, but in my opinion it is for people who have more money than common sense. All that extra power is frivoluos and will be completely outdated in just a few months. I say, wait for DX10 stuff to show up, then get a high-powered card.

But then again, you are spending a ton of money on that system. Its up to you, but its way overkill for anything besides impressing your friends.

Thanks.
That was the one element I really wasnt sure about. I was originally looking at BFG 7900GT 512MB. It's about 200 buck cheaper and will be a good tie over.
BTW,
Im coming off of a 3 year old Dell Dimension 8200. P4 2.53 I think its a socket 478. Still works, but am turning it over to the kids.

K.
I kept the CPU as is. It's reasonable and I had been looking at a C2D 6600 which is still 90 bucks more expensive. Plus, from what Im coming from, the 4600 should be amazing. Also, Im in no major rush come Q1 07 to get the 65nm chips yet. I'll wait and see. This is my first build. I did cancel the 7950 GX2. I found the Gigabyte 1900XT for 350 after an instant rebate of 70.00. This seems to outperform the 7900 GT and in some cases the GTX.
Odd though that I bought the SLI board and SLI cert PS. I assume that the 6 pins PS for either the Nvidia or ATI cards is a standard connector (at least as far as I can tell)?
BTW, overall cost with above, 2 DVD drives, media reader, Logitech speaker system (280w), Saitek KB, MX1000 mouse, and OS was about 1972.00. Good for me.
