Just about 2 minutes ago there was an extremely loud "pop" or "crack" sound in my comp and it just shuts off. It is raining right now and I am not sure if it was a surge that did it, (my comp has weathered lightning storms before). I am not sure what is dead, my mother board has a green light on it near the pci slots and when I plug my PSU in and turn it on (the PSU) and the light lights up, so I dont think its my PSU thats dead. Has anyone heard of this before? or what could have been the culprit?

Here are my specs:
Antec NEO HE 550 watt PSU
AMD x3800+ AM2 socket processor
ASUS M2N4-SLI Socket AM2 Link
EVGA 7900GT KO
2gig of Corsair Value Select 533, CL4

Nothing was overclocked, except for the Graphics card, temps seemed adequate.
AIbooster read system temp at about 39-40 celsius under heavy load, CPU gets to 59 under heavy load. Stuff didnt seem that hot to destroy anything...
(Ive been running this set up since the end of july and it has worked perfectly.. till now).
Thanks to anyone who can help me with this dilema

So what happens when you turn it on?? Fans go on?? Does it Post?
If the fans don't even go on test it with another power supply...

If they do go on but there is no post it still might be worth testing it with another PSU. Then i guess if you got mate who has a similar computer try and test out some components is his like ram and video card.... and if you find that they are all ok but still no post then you have rounded it down to either MOBO or CPU..... and from there unless your mates MOBO can take your CPU i am not sure where you can go from.... Hmm the POP sound doesn't seem very good though... i have seen computer where the MOBO and PSU all went at once.... Hmm when did you get it perhaps it is still on warranty???

Hmm can't really tell much more at this stage....

Good luck

You could try to jump start the psu by removing the atx connector and shorting the power_good to ground like so

Well remove the power cable first and set the rear power sw to off first  if it can power the fans / hdds and eject the cdrom and all the voltages are good etc then it may work, but usually it is the first thing to go when your nick happens.

There is a great deal at amazon on a CyberPower CP800AVR 800VA $76 shipped check out the specs at newegg and cyberpower.

I did the jumper thing and nothing turned on >_<. So I am pretty sure it is dead, going to try using another PSU on my current MOBO to make sure thats not toast either.

I seriously hope that you are going to be using a good surge protector.

My comp was plugged into a surge protector(it was around 15-20$ i think) and has given me no problems for a year+ o_O. I almost just think I had a bad capacitor or somethin. But I will definately look into a better surge protector
