Next!Albian Years SciKit Genetics tab looks in wrong place..

The kind folks who made The Albian Years (C1 and C2 for XP) moved the
genetics folder (among others) to C:\Documents and Settings\<Username>\My
Documents\Creatures\Creatures2\Genetics.

Unfortunately they forgot to tell the Science Kit that. So, all I get when
I try to open the Genetics Tab is an error message saying the genome [XXXX]
could not be found.

It shows that it is looking for it in the main C2 Directory instead of
where it has now been located.

Any help would be appreciated here.

I don't think there's a fix for this yet, frustratingly .. the last
mention on the Gameware forums was earlier this month, with Lisa saying
she'd pass the message onto whoever was responsible for the remastered
editions, so hopefully there might be a patch.. certainly Don's fix
doesn't make it work.

(Also, hi.)

Guess I'd better get on over there to the forums and add my voice to the
call for changes. =}

So copy it from *<Username>* to *Program Files*? Or just install the
whole game to the *<Username>* folder?

Not that simple, Thomas, as the game is constantly creating new
genome files and putting them in the wrong place.

Anyway, Don promises me she is working on a fix that will be
"soon" and not "soon(TM)". =`)

You need <META HTTP-EQUIV="Refresh" CONTENT="0;
,URL=file://localhost/c:/*<Username>*"> in your C2 folder.

lol.

On *nix it would be trivial however. But I forgot how to link
directories (probably just with the mount command).

In MS-DOS you would have the join and the subst command, and now you see
what happens if MS no longer deems them useful!

In what? a *.txt file in the place where it is looking for the
Genetics files that tells it where to look for the new folder?

With Join you could 'mount' an entire drive onto a directory. With Subst
you could do the opposite. It doesn't work in 98SE that I have however..
I doubt that it will in XP. You would have to do it (join e:
c:\docs\gens), before you started C2 from the same prompt.

And .bat ~would~ work better than .txt ;)

Yeah, that too.

ln -s full-path-to-olddir newdir

You can also do relative paths, but they'll be evaluated from the parent dir
of newdir, not the cwd when you run ln.

NTFS has something to replace them, I think. Junctions or something.

It's some poorly documented command-line thing. linkd.exe, I think.

Heh, but I remind you this is NOT WoW... and that carpet is probably more

You are saying, in addition to the dangers I face in WoW and the real
world, I also face the danger of poisoning by the AGC carpet on usenet?!

"God is playing creatures - and we're the norns."

"A hundred dead are a tragedy - a hundred thousand are statistics."

"I guess you can call yourself lucky." -
"I could, but Linda suits me a little better... :)
Things called lucky tend to get hit by trucks."
