I hhave a new ASus a730w battery life I notice is not that great but
there is a spare battery. The spare cannot be charged except in the
unit. Can anyone tell me (best guess I know it's different for each
device) how long a spare battery can be carried around and still
expect to be holding a charge when needed.

Example: carry my PDA for a wee along with a spare battery, most of
the weekI can simply recharge the unit when needed. However at the end
of the eek I'm in a conference and run the unit non-stop all morning
so the battery dies. Can I still expect the spare I've been carrying
all week to have a reasonably full charge?

Thanks for any info

Rechargeable batteries lose about 1% of their charge every day, when not
in use, so in theory, you should be good to go.

That's been my experience with the extended batteries
for the Toshibe E 750. Even after a few weeks, 85%.

Different battery technologies have different self discharge rates.

NiMH and NiCd batteries can lose anywhere from 1-5% of their charge per
day, (depending on the storage temperature) even if they are not
installed in a device. Lithium-ion batteries will retain most of their
charge even after months of storage.
