I'm confused. You installed windows 7 with XP already loaded? Do you mean you installed windows 7 over windows xp? If you installed windows 7 on your system and your system originally had windows xp on it, then windows xp is no more. (assuming you didn't set up some sort of dual booting scenario.) So in that case you can just back up all important data and then continue with the re-installation of windows 7.

I assume that you have a dual boot windows XP Windows 7 system, if you do a repair install of Windows 7 it should preserve the existing Windows XP installation and boot loader. You may then have two options on the boot screen to access Windows 7 which you can then edit by a program such as vistabootpro or easybcd.
