According to this... the new chips are to keep track of ink levels, but
the printer will still continue to print if the level is 0.

Whether or not one can reset the chips is unclear, or whether the
printer would operate without them at all. But looks like our fear
that the new tanks are to prevent refilling is not justified.

The present msrp for the new PGI-5BK is $16.25 vs $13.95 for the old
bci-3e.
The MSRP for the cli-8 is $14.25 vs $11.95 for the old BCI-6. OEM
users expect to spend 2.30 each extra for the new tanks, or $11.50 for
a 5 tank printer $13.80 for a 6 tank printer, or $18.40 for an 8 tank
printer. Whether or not it would be cheaper to order bci-7s from japan
for ï¿¥1,029 / $9.30 USD and use an existing Canon printer is unclear.
Those who are unaware the bci-7s use the same chromalife100 ink as the
new cli-8.
