24 pin male to 20 pin female?

My PSU has a 24 pin connector, my mb only has a 20 pin female... I didn't realize my old mobo (20 pin also) has been running off this PSU for a couple of years now, but I just want to make sure I didn't just get lucky, as this is a brand new board and I don't have money to burn. So is it safe? I can't seem to find any info on this.
