I chose pascal because I use Borland Delphi, which is based on pascal, the most.

Lighten up- u take things a little too seriously (no offense, just stating the truth). I was merely hinting I'm teh person who voted for excel.

i already knew that, of course! what do you think?!?
& this is why i repeat another time the same meaning:
that's right. throw away from my poll! (no offense)

i would like to try to have this time an objective realistic poll reflecting the real accurate opinions of THGC members.

note:
otherwise what those polls are used for? clowned penguin?

do you think, this is possible on this THGC forum or is it just an utopian thought?

add-on:
if you think there is something annoying, weird or whatsoever, tell me your thinking frankly; discussion is the main activity on a forum. :)

<i>this was the Lab day thought. :)</i>

Bah! can't believe c++ is edgeing out Java....Java is the wave of the future. man!!!!

Excpet if ur working for M$....then you'd be using c# (c-sharp) , which you forgot to put on your list, btw.

agreed but it exists many main enterprises which used C++ because of their programming historic or because C++ fit better their needs.

moreover i would like to upset that Java is a OOP INTERNET oriented language but not C++.

those 2 languages havent the same applications goal.

Java is basically C++ but better.

Hah, c++ is more "fun"! :) Where else can u have a pointer to a pointer to a function?
I'd select Cobol/RPG but I'd get flamed ;)

Reply to HighCv2

I agree, it is way better!
Where else can you hack and compile code on a different system architecture/platform and be able to run it on a whole buncha other architecture/platforms!

Personally, I wish lisp were on here. It's a FUN language. Other than that, I guess I choose C++. Java still has to many issues for me to ever want to touch it again... *looks at 40ft pole and puts on hazmat suit* Nope, still won't touch it.

do you work on AI?

<i>if <b>you know</b> <font color=white>you don't know<font color=black>, the way could be more easy ...

I dabble in many things- I actually work with genetics primarily and pattern recognition (a big part of AI) is of interest to me.

i have guessed this one (LISP language).

i like also IA but when i have worked on, i understood that was just the beginning of (6 years ago).
are there now some main advances with IA?

i forget another type of languages called HLL (High Level Language) like LISP & VHHL (Very High Level Language) like PROLOG (used both mainly for AI).

you can enter them here & maybe describe also a little their utilization.

Yeah, I struggled through C++ until I started to get the hang of it. The whiny complier got on my nerves alot. Then I started VB and it was a breath of fresh air in comparison to C++. VB is much easier, but C++ has the power. I agree with you, like a south-paw; VB is my right-jab and C++ is my left-cross.

You gotta love pattern recognition. Wasn't there a high profile military project to have computers recognise tanks. They fed the program with hundreds (or thousands?) of tank pictures. It started to recognise all of them fine.

Come the testing day. Break out a new sample of pictures. Pass it through the program. It failed to recognise a single tank. After a while they noticed the learning footage all had rain or it was extremely gloomy. The test batch were from a sunny desert. The program didn't learn to recognise tanks at all, it was rather good at telling if its a rainy day, though.

Assembly??? Why on earth would you wanna do som'n stupid like that? These days compilers are almost perfect, instructions are too many. Stick with a higher level. C++ is the best, unless you wanna do some web related stuff. Then youd' probably wanna do java or .NET.

If I go to university I'll have to build my own compilers. And it sounds cool to know that language... but yeah C++ and Java will probably be my main languages, especially when I start working more with Linux; I want to be able to build my own stuff.

You can do that with C++. Just learn to use some text parsers like lex & yacc or flex & pccts. You can make pretty powerful compilers with that. But I've never made any compiler producing natively executable machine code though. Actually I don't know if you need asm for that or not. :-(

Well I'll probably find out when I learn more about programming. Think I'm trying to learn C++ this summer break... you know any good site's and progs that I can use?

<A HREF="http://www.cplusplus.com/doc/tutorial/" target="_new">http://www.cplusplus.com/doc/tutorial/</A> is somewhere you could make a start. And a general search for c++ tutorials would probably give you some results.

For programs, IDEs are usually expensive. MS Visual C++ is the most popular one for windows platforms. You can a get a free one called DevC++ from <A HREF="http://www.bloodshed.net" target="_new">Bloodshed Software</A>. It uses a GCC based compiler which should do, but obviously isn't as good as the commercial compilers.

If you just want the compiler, borland has a free one, GCC is a popular compiler among users of linux and windows users.

Thanks for the links, only the one to Bloodshed Software isn't working.
I will see if I can get a 'free' version of MS Visual C++ somewhere, otherwise I will download a real free one.
