Hey everyone,
I recently got my new computer and it's using windows 7 RC 64-bit. I want to upgrade to the full version, but I know I can't just buy an upgrade disk. So i was looking at buying Windows 7 Ultimate OEM (64-bit).

Is it OK if I just use the backup and restore tool and backup my stuff onto an external hard drive, and once I get my copy of Windows 7, I reformat my hard drive and install Windows 7 along with all the data I backed up?

Sorry if this is confusing but I'm not so sure what to do and don't want to lose all of my documents, videos, music, etc.

If you've already upgraded from the RC to Windows 7, can you tell me how you did it?

Thanks

No... buy the OEM as it costs about half as much as retail. Keep in mind though, that you cannot move the OEM license from PC to PC. The computer you install it on first is the computer it must remain with. However, if you want to transfer your copy of 7 to another computer (if you upgrade down the road) then buy the retail version.

Don't bother upgrading from the RC to RTM. Buy an OEM disk, back up your data, wipe the drive out and to a clean install.

OK that's what I'm planning to do, and what is the RTM?

Reply to Jonnyinter

RTM = Release to Manufacturing. RTM denotes the final version of the product that ships to customers, post-beta testing.

So you just recommend that I buy the retail version?

Sorry if these questions are a bit stupid but I have to find out :ange:

Thanks for everything. I don't think I'm gonna be upgrading until at least Windows 8. Just finished building my new computer so it should last me for 3-5 years :D

If you are a student, look for an academic license for windows-7. It will be a retail version and will cost much less.
