Epson 950 broken due to big bump?

A few days ago something heavy fell on my computerdesk, hitting some stuff
including the Epson Photo 950. On first sight I was amazed that the only
visible damage was just some scratches on the plastic top. After switching
it on though, the printhead goes through it's usual routine, then moves
slowly to the left, makes a CLOINK noise and stops there. Two red lights
come on and all action ceases. Does it hit a safety swith of some sort on
the left side? It really sounds like metal on metal. I still have a large
quantity of spare ink cartridges left so if I could at least get it to work
momentarily... Any suggestions?

Thanks,

P-P.

Have you tried lubricating the silver guide bar with a silicone based spray?
Sometimes that bar gets dusty and the head doesn't travel correctly. Try
putting some on the bar, run the printer a time or two then lubricate again.

Try taking the housing/top cover off to see what is hitting what.
Usually all you need is a longish crosspoint driver to get the
cover off.

I agree, the bump may have been coincidental, or it might have thrown
the head carriage guide bar off and out of tolerance.

Could the heads be out on the timing belt? - the belt that drives the
head unit, if so, is it a matter of resetting it to the docking
section with the printer 'off'. another possiblity is the leavers and
springs on the docking unit itself could have become disturbed.

A good check would be to look at the micro switches around the docking
area.

Took the cover off (only four screws, did almost rip the control-panel wires
off), looked at everything, nothing looked strange... Printhead hits left
side of the carrier, you hear a metallic sound and all action stops. Red
warning lights come on, that's it.

Thanks

Yes, lubricated it, checked again, same thing. Lubricated again, same thing.
It's a shame, it was a véry good printer (everybody was amazed by the
quality). Not fast though, just very, very good.

Because the ink is very expensive I bought a Canon IP4000, must honestly say
that the quality of this little printer surprised me, in a very positive
way. Will try aftermarket ink when the originals run out, if they are "okay"
I'll be very happy.

Nope, everything looks fine. The printhead does move left and right
properly. When switching it on it goes through some sort of self check which
it didn't do prior to the big bump. It goes all the way left, slowly. Then
all the way right, slowly. Then left again, fast. Cloink, head is stuck.
Warning light comes on. Have tried putting a small object on the left side
so that the head doesn't make the metallic noise but it *needs* to travel
all the way left to complete the self check so that was no option. Will try
to sell my spare ink, the buyer can take the whole printer with him. Maybe
it's the smallest thing ever, he can consider himself lucky then.

With a lot of Epsons the belt is just a belt and the head can be
anywhere on it. To the right hand side of the carriage travel is
a vane switch, the stepper motor that drives the head increments
the head in steps from there.
