I have in my desktop taskbar the icon for "Safely Remove Hardware". I have
tried everything to make it go away. Sits right next to the clock. The icon
has a green arrow pointing left and slightly downward and some sort of
hardware. I have tried the usual methods of removing it but I must be
missing something. Thanks for any suggestions.

Do you understand the purpose of the icon?

Why is it irritating? I find its use very reassuring when I'm ready to
detach a removable USB drive.

Right click on taskbar>Properties>Hide inactive icons>Customize.
