External storage, what are my options?

I do a lot of video editing. My editing machine has plenty of space internally for current projects. But I want to archive my old projects.

Currently, I've enclosed 3.5 inch drives in external USB cabinets, but I have 4 now, and they're used up. It's getting a bit cluttered.

I've though about a NAS device, but I'm concerned.. what if the hardware dies (not the disks themselves) can I move the disks to new device and read the data? I haven't taken the plunge for these reasons.

Are there other options? Is there direct attachable storage that can house multiple drives? Access speed is NOT a priority.

My dream solution would be a cabinet that houses up to 8 drives. Connects via USB or Fireware (don't want to add SCSI adapter). The drives then behave just like internal direct attached disks. Then the OS can format/read/write them as usual.
