No reason to buy a 7900 GTX anymore with 7950 GT, and with 7900 GTO rumored.
So 2x 7950 GT is abt a 7950 GX2, and a 7950 GX2 costs 500$ while 2 7950 GTs would cost 600$ and would require a more expensive motherboard.
So its either the 7900 GTO/7950 GT for 300$ or the 7950 GX2 for 500$.
Your going to want to sell either card in 19-38 months when DX10 comes, though so think hard.
Which is more powerful out of the two?....because the VGA charts say that the 7900GTX beats the 7950GX2 in most games, so I wasnt sure which one to get, as both cards are same price.
I dont have any water cooling etc so would heat be a major issue with the 7950GX2?

The 7950 GX2 is almost twice as good as the 7900 GTX, so i dont know what kind of crazy charts ur looking at.
You can see this from it's price aswell wichais a lot higher.
IF u had watercooling it would actually be twice as good, but the stock coolers are just fine, and u can even overclock it to 550-600Mhz if ur lucky.
The 7950GX2 is not even close as being twice as good as the 7900GTX, if your gonna spend that much money go with the x1950xtx. I'd say buy a x1900xt to hold you over until dx10.

Shows what u know. Any XTX card is a scam, as it is horribly overpriced.
The X1900XT is the ONLY card to buy from this series.
The 7950 GX2 is composed of 2 7900 GTXs (stock @ 650/1600) @ 500/1200. So its like 2 underclocked 7900 GTXs, meaning its almost the same performance. And since u can overclock to 550-600Mhz on the 7950 GX2's stock cooler(s) then its basicly the same thing as the 7900 GTX on STOCK.

laxman did give the 1900xt as his main recommendation so why pick it apart? And by the way the 7950GX2 is not the "same thing as the 7900GTX" even figuratively. The 7950GX2 holds up much better as resolutions and eye candy are turned up and I see several suspect things on the VGA charts that don't "mesh" with dozens of reviews on other sites as far as which is more powerful. Not to say its leaps and bounds but for games optimized for SLI it does a good job of whipping the GTX.
Edit(just noticed the board mentioned) If you want nvidia then I would probably say the 7950gt would be great if you can find one. If not the new 7900GS is a great card for the $. Not knowing your current card or how important saving a buck might be to you hurts recommending anything. If you can go ATI tho I would personally choose the 1900XT for current price/performance and save any extra $ for dx10 card.
Btw, can you post the site where you saw the 7900GTX beating the 7950GX2 in most games? For another comparison, take a look here. The 7950GX2 is usually more expensive than the 7900GTX by around $100. Though, I did see the ASUS 7900GTX for $499 at Newegg which is insanely overpriced.
You can pick up an eVGA 7900GTX for $377 after MIR and S&H. eVGA 7900GTX
Though, if you are looking for best bang for the buck, the following is your card for $284 after MIR and S&H: MSI X1900XTX They are currently Out of Stock on Newegg, but new shipments are estimated to arrive next Monday, so I'd hold out to see if they come in. The rebate is good for purchases until the end of the month.
Though, if you don't want to mess with a MIR, Newegg has the Leadtek 7950GT for only $266: 7950GT
Now, you can put 2 of these in SLI mode for $532 which is pretty sweet: Benchmarks
Woah Nelly (Fertado). I'd like to know what drivers those benchmarks used. I've never seen the GX2 perform so badly. I would not trust those benchmarks. Somebody screwed up somewhere and how.
Here's the benchmarks for the GX2 and 7900GTX during Tomshardware reveiw of ATI's X1950XTX. Benchmarks
These paint a clearer picture and shows the 7950GX performing so much better in most benchmarks than the 7900GTX.
The 7950GX2 is probably 2 7950GT's put together since Anandtech states that "Each GPU on the 7950 GX2 is essentially a higher clocked 7900 GT" and that "the 7950 GT is essentially an overclocked 7900 GT with 512MB of RAM as opposed to 256MB". These are taken from two different articles so I'm just using a little logic to come to a conclusion. 7950GX27950GT

Unless the XTX is similar price...

WTF? 7950GX2 is two 7900GTs, not GTXs, and charts show, the 7950GX2 (just like SLI, CF) is better at higher resolutions.
I own the 7950 GX2 and have had no problems with the card. It performs flaulessly. I play Oblivion (among other games) and it eats it up with the settings all tuned up. Oblivion is a graphicly demanding game and I have had absolutely no frame stutter. Fluid movements inside and outside. One down side to the nVidia cards is you have to decide to either use AA and no HDR or HDR and no AA. But either configuration works wonderful in game on inside or outside enviorments. Just my 2 cents from an actual card owner.
