965 vs 975 chipset. Which is better for C2D and Why? Enphasis on gaming and upgradability. Seems the 965 is newer but the 975 will be able to support future chipsets (ie.. quad core) while the 965 wont?

Thanks for any info in advance.

I could be wrong, but I'm relatively certain the 965 will support quadro with a simple bios upgrade. I think most people overlocking c2d's are having the most sucess with 965 actually. I remember reading I think it was an anandtech article where they kept saying the 975 was the better oc'r but in the forums people kept saying that that wasn't the case at all, and people were generally having more sucess with 965.

"well any motherboard which supports core 2 duo today(965 and 975 series chipsets)will support kentsfield with a bios update.
I'm not sure about the 945 series.
So to answer ur question.Ur safe with a 965 series mobo."

just an excerpt from an anandtech forum dealing with quad core compatibility

Thanks, just wanted to be sure I wasnt "painting myself in a corner" if I chose one or the other. Seeing as the 965 is the more "recent" model, I will probably lean towards that :)

Cheers!

Get the 965

REASON:
ATI has announced that the x965 WILL support Cross-fire too. (like the 975)

the ASUS 965 are WAY better than the 975 (at least P5B deluxe)

ICH8R is so much more **BLING** than the ICH7R (the '8' has Matrix RAID)

I have just had such a good experience with an P5B deluxe and a E6300 together with some relatively cheap Corsair memory (xms2-6400cl5 2x1GB), that I **MUST** recommend this setup. (I got to 3.6 GHz on air cooling)
