My Pocket PC 2003 had been working perfectly since I purchased it last
Spring. I have been using it to connect to the Internet at the Library using
the WLAN. At home I use Bluetooth off my desktop HP MCE to connect to the
Internet.

I was disappointed to hear that HP will not offer an upgrade to 2003 Second
Edition. It seems to me that most of the owners of upgradeable HP Pocket PCs
would be willing to pay for Windows Mobile 2003 SE if it was offered. But
instead, HP has decided to alienate a big bunch of their customers. They are
not offering an update on the new H6315 Phone PPC either. I guess I should
have purchased a Toshiba!

After searching the HP site, I decided to install the Firmware, Rom, and
Driver updates that can be downloaded for the H5555. Before doing the
updates I backed up the H5555. Then I installed the new system's
programs.Afterward I restored my files from the prior backup file.
Everything seemed to be working all right, except I could not logon at any
site requiring secure ID and Password. I would get a, "The page you are
looking for cannot be found." error. I was unable to find a solution for the
problem on the Internet. (There are many H5555 owners that are having the
same problem, and there is a lot of bad suggestions in the forums that don't
fix the operation.) I contacted HP Support and they were no help at all.
Finally I did a hard reset and reinstalled all my additional software. Now I
could do a secure logon, and I thought everything was back to working.

On a trip to the Library this week I discovered that my WLAN 802.11b was not
working correctly. The automatic connection that always worked flawlessly
before the upgrade would not connect. I have pocketWiNc installed and used
it to evaluate the problem. Everything looked good from the Server side, but
the connection icon would stay red and not give me Internet access. I
discovered that the H5555 would connect when using the Ad-hoc feature. I was
unable to correct the WLAN connection problem. In desperation I Restored the
software that had been backed up before the download. I was delighted that
my WLAN worked like new, but alas.... ;-( My secure logon doesn't
work!

Maybe you should call for a HP boycott.

This is most likely the problem right here. After a ROM update it is
recommended to do a fresh install of all your apps and data. When you do a
resotre you are overwritting something the rom update has fixed. I would
erease everything and reinstall from scratch.

Yes. You didn't read my post carefully. I did a hard reset and reinstalled
my other software. When doing so I lost the proper operation of the WLAN.
The problem doesn't seem to be in the firmware and Rom update. WLAN comes
back when I Restore the old installation, but I lose SSL logon.

Guess what? Last time 'round Toshiba customers were screwed when HP
provided upgrades to Windows Mobile 2003 for most devices and Toshiba
didn't even for it's very recent top model.

To be honest, I don't really understand all the anger regarding the SE
upgrade. Sure, it would've been nice, but after all, the existing HP
hardware would not really benefit much from the new software while
Toshiba finally got the proper system to run on its VGA hardware. I'd
bet that this was the sole reason for them to provide an upgrade free
of charge.

There may be a wlan update that you need to install. I know on my 5550
after installing everything I still had to install some patch for the wlan.
I would make sure you have wlan fixes installed as well.
