I am currently planning to purchase an ADSL modem with wireless router function built in.
I have such requirements:
1. Long range
2. stable, can run continuously for a long time without too many resets or connection off.
3.it doesn't have to be too fast just 54mbps is OK but I do need it to reach as far as possible
4. good compatibility
any recommendations including brand name and model number, price.
The only home gateways with all of that built in that I can think of at the moment are the Netgear DG834PN or one of the 2Wire 1000/2000 series. A much better/more reliable solution would be to separate the modem and router. DSL modems have a tendancy to get fairly warm. A modem+router+switch+wireless in one little box = high heat. I had one of those all in one things a long time ago because I thought it might be faster. It wasn't any faster and running a couple torrents melted it, literally.
If you must go with one I would take the 2wire over the netgear for reliability any day. 2wire gateways are a little harder to come by I think. Might be an ebay item.
