Poll on naming of AMD's dual socket dual core platform.

Personally, I think 4x4 sounds too much like a piece of wood :-D
It's an atrocious name. I like Quadfather a lot more.

I agree, AMD should continue on the path of giving their platforms and processors kickass names. Clawhammer? Bulldozer? Deerhound? Might as well come out with this one; NWA for K10! BloodCrip for K11! WutangClan for K12!

I think they should keep it simple, and stay away from tacky names like 4x4,quad-father, etc. Maybe something like X2FX. Then they can tack on the processor model #...eg. X2FX-70, X2FX-74. I think they did it wrong when they went from FX-57 to FX-60, with nothing in the model name differentiating it from single-core. When quad-core comes out, they could call it X4 4400+, X4 5000+, etc.

Quadfather is the gayest thing I have ever heard. Whoever came up with it should be shot. 4X4 isn't so bad, it's easily remembered, but not very exciting. They need to come up with a unique brand name, like, oh hell I don't even know, just not something gay as hell or generic.

Blackhole? No amount of electricity can escape its grasp.

That's why it would take two black holes to take down a 4X4 system.

I think both names are iffy. Quadfather says " buy Intel" to me; and I assure you I would rather jab a popsicle stick in my eye. 4x4 reminds me of redneck pick trucks, as I live in a rural area. I haven't come up with anything better.
They could tweak the cores for certain apps and name them for what they do-like 4Games, 4Porn, etc.
that's my 4 cents

What an interesting thread...

Both 4x4 and Quadfather suck as names... they lack the catchiness of previous names... come on, Clawhammer was a kick ass name...

FX2 would work I reckon, though that should have been the FX range's name for the dual-core versions. Or how about FX^2? (Note: since I can't do the superscript thing, I will use the power sign "^" to denote the squared function) However, maybe it should go down the route of "AMD X-ZOMG" or maybe even FX-OMGWTFBBQ... just for hilarity's sake

AMD's dual-socket, dual-core CPUs are called Santa Rosa (Opteron 2210-2220 SE.) Unlike Intel, I don't think that AMD names their specific platforms beyond just the CPU/socket because, unlike Intel, they do not make the entire platform (yet.)

AMD hasn't exactly come out and said what CPUs that it will put in the 4x4 platform. If they are the 65W 65nm ones (I think it's pretty likely, given their focus on heat and power consumption) then it will likely consume no more or even less power than a Kentsfield. The two K8 chips would be independently regulable as far as clock speed under varying loads, Kentsfield AFAIK has all of the cores run at the same speed. So under single-threaded load conditions of 1 CPU at 100% and the rest at idle, all Kentsfield cores would run at top speed while only 2 of the four K8 cores would. Also, there would be more heatsink and fan to draw heat away from two smaller chips than one bigger one, so the two K8s will individually run cooler than the Kentsfield. And as far as power is concerned, two 65W K8s vs. one 2x65W pair of Conroes in one die should be little different. Intel's power-hungry, off-die and not included in a chip TDP MCH will likely push the platform's total consumption above the two K8s and two banks of RAM as the MCH takes about 40W and an extra bank of DDR2 takes maybe 15W or so.

I prefer
'Watered-down, non-ECC unregistered Opty Workstation wannabe'

Since that is what it is.

Or

"2 socket please get a 750 Watt powersupply platform"

Since that is what you will need. At 250 watts just for the CPUs under load. Stick 2 7590 GX2's in there and you will have consumed close to 500 watts of your supply. Geeezzzyyy, and one thought Prescott was hot :)

Jack
Now i know that saying anything pro-AMD is dangerous in these days, but i find it interesting that the 89W rated X2 3800+ consumes less (under load) than the 65W rated 4600+ EE (and both less than C2D E6400). (link)
Maybe there is still a chance that 4x4 or whatever is called won't necessarily be such a terrible power hog...

Do the two CPUs engage in butt sex or something? I didn't realize computer hardware could be so "gay"!
