Hi I have new dell 8400 computer with nvidia 6800 GTO card, driver
61.77, and windows XP, tried to run my good old game NFS high stakes,
but to my huge disappointment, the graphics broke up all over the
place, all kind of polygons flying on screen with some cracking sound,
I turned on vertical sync and play with different options, but no
success.

I love this game so much, please help! thanks a millon!

You probably need the "spot" patch, which is an upgrade to the 3d
driver for NFSHS. You can get it here:

http://jeffareid.net/cgi-bin/spotptch.zip

directions are included. I recommend using dx7z.dll to replace
d3da.dll. Don't forget get to run d3d.reg after running
3dsetup.

thanks a lot jeff, that pretty much fixed it and it's playable.

I have a similar probelem with a GForce FX 5700. The fonts are all
screwed. Will this fix that problem as well?

Try the "spot" patch. This is a replacement / upgrade for the
direct x driver in NFS4. I've kept a copy of this on my own
web site:

http://jeffareid.net/cgi-bin/spotptch.zip

Instructions are included. I recommend using dx7z.dll to replace
d3da.dll. If you plan on doing video captures with fraps,
dx8z.dll is better for this because it's a bit faster, however
the intro movies will not show up.

I'm not aware of a font issue with NFS4, but NFS5 / Porsche Unleashed
often has menu font issues with Nvidia cars. You can try going
to the video driver setup and force ansiotropic feature to be on.
If this doesn't work you just have to live with the garbled
fonts on the menus and the timer during a factory driver event.
The rest of the graphics will work fine.
