What is dotnetfx40 for?

I need to have dotnet framework 2.0 installed to download my overclocking software. Is this DotNetfx 40 an update of DotNet framework 2.0. Will DotNet fx 40 allow me to download my overclocking software or do I need version 2.0. What is the functionality of this of these two programs or software or whatever it is. Basically all i want to know is if I can just install the DotNet fx40 or do I need to install 2.0 or both. Please and thank you.

In my experience you should only need dotnetfx4.0. It should cover anything contained in previous versions.
