If I am looking into some serious video editing, what computer components would be best to focus on? Right now, the computer I am using is a 2001 DELL with a 2Ghz P4 and a gig of 233Mhz RAM running pinnacle studio...but I will be getting a new one soon.

I use the computer in my sig to do video editing with Pinnacle studio. Works very well, but I believe my e6600 system will do much better. Focus on a dual core processor with 2 gigs of fast RAM. A couple of large SATA hard drives will work well. HTH

Thanks! I'd still like some more advice. Could I get a brand new computer with what you suggested for under $1000? That is pretty much the limit for me right now.

I'm sure some of these guys can price out a system for you that would do the job admirably.

Apple G-5 with quad processors, Is a serious Video machine, that is if you are serious about it.

Otherwise any e series will work fine.

Hard drives and ram are key.

Serious is not under $1000.

Are you planning to re-use any components of your old Dell? If so, then you might get a nice system under $1000. I don't have the actual figures for the following specs, but I know some other members should help in on that area.

---VIDEO EDITING---

1) C2Duo E6700

2) One of the Asus Mobos based on the 965 chipset --really don't know

3) WD Raptor 150gigs for OS

4) Seagate 7200.10 300 or 500 gigs for Video/Audio storage

5) An Nvidia Card ---good OpenGL support for Video Editing in NLE
systems, like Avid, Premiere, FCut...etc

6) 2-4 gigs of Ram

7) XFI sound card from Creative

8) Good case w/ PSU and cooling solution

Should be around $1,200 to $1,400 the most...don't know if that is too much over your budget.

---IDEAL SYSTEM CONFIGURATION---

I run a similar system at work:

1) NVIDIA Quadro FX3500

2) Intel Xeons 5120 or 5130 - get 2 of each for 4P system

3) WD Raptor 150gig, for OS

4) Seagate 7200.10 350 or 500 gigs for Video/Audio storage

5) MOBO -- I don't know what MOBO configuration will be best for DC Xeons

6) XFI-Audio card

7) 2-4 gigs of Ram

8) Good case and PSU combo

Splendid
Simple:

Dual core Intel or AMD
TONS of RAM (2GB+)
Dual 10,000 rpm drives in RAID 0. Or you can go the SCSI route and get 15,000 rpm drives and get a high end PCI-E RAID controller. Just make sure you have a large (500GB) single drive to store the videos on. You might even want to consider RAID 0+1. It all depends though.

Video card is of minor importance unless you're planning on doing special effects and crap.

There's nothing worth transferring from the dell to the new one. oh, and how fast and what kind of ram would be worth it. 2 gigs of 800 MHz could get pretty pricey.
