Laptop to pc

I am needing some advice on what I will need to link my laptop to my pc.
I am nearly computer illiterate, so I will need it in the simplest laymens terms. I bought this laptop to take it to Iraq with me and now that I am home I have decided to go back to college and would like to use my laptop for school so I need to be able to link it to my pc. I am on Verizon DSL. Both computers use Windows XP. Let me know what other info you might need about them and I will do my best to give it.

Buy a router. You can pick one up cheap; around $50ish. You can connect both the desktop and laptop to it and have internet for both. You can also set up shares on either if you want to move files back and forth. If you want to have them wireless, you'll need wireless NICs for both and make sure the router is wireless capable.
