Items on desktop won't open

Restart your machine and try again. Give the system time to load into Windows, too. Even though you can see an icon on the desktop, if the machine is still booting up it won't immediately launch the programme associated with the icon. Depending on the age of the system, leave it anywhere from 15 seconds to 3 minutes (approx.)

See if the items in start menu works.

If not, see if there is another user account, then try using that account

If not, boot the computer into safe mode by rebooting it, and after your manufacturer logo disappears press F8 repeatedly until a menu appears. Select "safe mode".
