Hi everyone, long time no post....

Anyway, i need a new video card to last me until next year and at least run a demo of crysis on minimum settings 8O ( nah just kidding) my real purpose is to not need a new psu.

i have:athlon 64 3500+, asus a8n-sli mb, 2*512 pc3200 ram, a 250 gb 16 mb buf. 7200 tpm maxtor hd, a cd/dvd..... combo, usually around a usb device and a network card plugged, my modem has its own power so it dont count, and a ati 1600 pro 512 pci-x.

My psu is rated 350 w and it came with the case, but it did a good job until now and i dont mind the risk of it blowin' up 8O , so i figure my pc uses about
210w not counting gpu( correct me if im wrong, and the psu should deliver at least 300w out of 350w, that said i could get an nvidia 7900 gt(about 55w?) and still have room for safety. Opinions, advices or at least encouragements anyone? :D

If your gonna want a 7900GT, and still use the PSU your using at this time, good chance your gonna blow it out, and have it take parts of your comptuer with it. I would suggest a new Power supply indefintely. Price range?

i agree it would be a good idea to upgrade

Well i only have 300$ for both gpu and psu may the need be, but im a little worried about installing it because of all those wires, do these things come with very big manuals? 'cause i need 'em! Im just so afraid of pluggin a wrong cable in the mb and see it blow all the same!

installing the psu is pretty easy all of the plugs go in only one way
just take your time stay grounded and you should be fine

you should be able to get a good psu for around 50 to 75$
and have enough $ for a 79gt or the 79gs is close to the 79gt
and about 50$ cheaper.

also the x1900 is around 225$ and maybe a little better than the 79gt
plus you wont have to uninstall drivers since you already have the x1600

I personally reckon you can do it, just, i have a very similar system with a 250W supply - the main difference being that it has a 6600GT and the PSU is still chugging away without dying :D

I can match a 7900GT and a good PSU for ya right now.

Total comes to a little more than 300, but overall a nice deal for both. Good Luck :D

A little off topic but isn't this a better card for the price?

your current psu MAY work but i wouldnt recommend trying it.

a psu isnt very hard to install in your computer. just 2 plugs for the mb which can only go 1 way and a couple more 4 your drives which will only go 1 way.

worst case sinario u will have 2 get sum1 to help you but u shouldnt be able to destroy anything without doing something completely stupid.

Yes, i have seen this card. The 7900GTO is a very nice performer for its price range. On tigerdirect, although many do not like their service has a very nice price for it after the rebate. The 7900GTO is pretty much a underclocked GTX or overclocked 7900GT, but is very overclockable to the GTX speeds considering its core speed. The x1900xt beats it or is dead on with it after the overclock, but due to the power supply issue, the GTO sounds like the better deal. Either the 7900GT or 7900GTO, whichever you prefer. Heres a link to the GTO:

I did see that, and thought that. But i was concerned if the power supply, good as it is,can handle that. But yea, either the x1900xt or the 7900GTO. Like i said, just depends what games you play.

Do I read the specs on that FSP PSU wrong or are there no PCI-e connectors?

Pretty sure you read it wrong. There is in fact a PCI-e connector.

Under the specifications tab (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6817104954) there is no PCI-e connector listed, but after looking in the picture I see it. Wonder why they don't list it.
