You can go with x1950xtx for now if u can't wait for the R600 and G80. As for monitor, a nice 22 or 24 inch LCD would do well. 8)
i'm building a rig based on E6600 too but on Gigabyte P965 DQ6.

Conroe E6600
2GB DDRII 800 kit Kingston HyperX. Or the normal ones(i still can't decide whether it's worth it)
2X74GB Raptor SATA RAID0
Silverstone ST75ZF PSU
ATI x1950xtx or R600/G80 IF I CAN WAIT
Thermaltake Kandalf LCS

Lower your CPU and spend more on the GPU / Monitor if it is mainly for gaming. The 6400 is cheaper and frees up funds for a better card, a 1K build might be a bit tight otherwise, and you can OC the 6400 if you get good RAM to 6600 levels and beyond very easily.

And please please please get a decent PSU... enermax, seasonic, PC power and cooling (and others I am sure), 500-600W >30amps on 12V if possible. Any high end card will need >18amps >25amps if its very high end.

And if I read your post right, its a really bad idea to buy your mobo and CPU from different places or at different times, the amount of finger pointing that will happen if you have a problem is immense.
