Had my Cingular service for two weeks now, and am still struggling
with SMS issues. (I'm new to cell phone technology--which may
partially explain it--but am learning quickly.) I've called Cingular
tech support about the problem, which has been escalated to Tier 3
support, but they have yet to resolve the problem. Thought some of
you veterans might see something I'm doing wrong.

I can send & receive without problem when the message uses a cell
phone number by itself as the address (To: 2145551212). But have the
following problems when I use an email address
(yourhandle@yourisp.net).

Receiving
---------
Can only receive from certain domains. Works from yahoo.com and
cingular.com but not from my company's mail servers.

Sending
-------
I can reply to a TM sent to me from an email address, but cannot send
a new message to an email address. I think I'm using the format
correctly. I have tried both 111 and 121 in the To: field, then the
destination email address, space, and message in the body of the
message, and nothing works.

Any suggestions?

Jim

That didn't work for me when I tested it just now. What does work is:

TO: "111"
MESSAGE BODY: "myemail@myisp.com(subjtest)testing 1..2..3"

Note there is NO space between .com and (subjtest). A space after
(subjtest) is ignored. Subject may be omitted with "()" but you can't
just leave out the parens.

Are you sure you have to use that manual format? Both my current Nokia
and my last Motorola had separate message screens for "write message"
(sms to another phone) and "write email" (to an email address). The
"write email" function has separate screens for TO, Subject, and Body
with predictive text off for to and subject but on for body.

As for the certain domains problem haven't seen that. Are you using the
address nnnnnnnnnn@mobile.mycingular.com?

Hey, this worked. Sorry for the delay. Google didn't post my
original response.

Would you happen to know the addressing scheme for sending MMS
messages to an email address? My software on the Treo 600 only has
fields for To: and Subj:. Tried 111 in To: and the destination email
address in the Subj: field, but no luck.

Nope, can't help you there if that didn't work. My 6340i doesn't "DO"
MMS. I assume you tried putting the email address in the To field for
those? Where does the body come from--to you "attach" something?

Try the carrier messaging-to-email gateway in the To: field, and the email
address as the first thing in the message; e.g.,

To:GATEWAYNUMBER
Body:EMAIL@EXAMPLE.COM Your real body.

Hey, the original format worked; just didn't see the test message
because my spam filter moved it to my bulk folder. So, the format is
simply to place the destination mail address in the To: field.

Many thanks to all!

Jim
