I was just wondering what everyone thought of the possibility of one of the next gereration GPUs being brought to AGP. I'm thinking about buying one of the hard to find GeForce 7800 GS CO Superclocked cards or the extremely overpriced GeForce 7800 GS+ cards. I do not have plans to build a new PC till the Yorkfield Core 2 Quads are out the end of next year. I need a good card till that time and my GeForce 6800 GT is starting to be overwhelmed.

There are rumors that Nvidia will supply Geforce eights for the VLB...

I don´t know why people buy a card that is about 100$ overpriced (the 7800 AGP robbery, for example) instead of just replacing the mainboard. 8O

who knows.......

Hi,

i don't think NVidia/ATi will release a DX10 card for the AGP slot.
AGP is obsolete.

As an alternative and depending on your current system you can just get a cheap PCIe mobo and a PCIe card instead. Investing into a AGP card now is a little late ... i wouldn't do it ..

I don't see the point quite frankly.

Maybe a 8600XT.

i agree with evertone else, dont bother investing in AGP, just buy a PCIe motherboard. surely you can keep your 6800GT going for just a little longer??

Reply to spanishfleee

the the thought of a gf8600xt does make me sad but if it supports DX10 and properly supports it not like a fx5200 supports dx9 then why the hell not plus even though AGP is dead there are still a great amount of ppl with AGP MoBo's

Reply to melarcky

i have the 6800 GT too and i was wondering the same thing but i guess ill just have to buy anoher mobo, the bad thing is that ill need to get another proccesor...that sucks

I have a P4 2.8C and a 6800GT, very happy. There's no game at 1280x1024 and med/high settings I've tried and had trouble with. I'll be upgrading my PC Q1 07, but that's mainly because the processor is slow with encoding, compressing etc.

ENOUGH! Just upgrade PLEASE!!! AGP is dead... someone correct me if I'm wrong, but with a card like an 8800, the AGP bus would become a bottleneck... right?

Btw, love the VLB comment of a previous poster... if they're gonna do the VLB thing do you think there's any chance they'll make an ISA version for my PS/2 30-286?

Reply to rodney_ws

If I remember correctly they said (or at least most ppl thought) that the 7 series wouldn't have AGP support either. But, the almighty pull of cash swayed them to do so at the end. I'm guessing they will make one more or models of cards still in AGP for the 8 series. Maybe not their top-of-the-line however.
A lot of people like to say AGP is obsolete, but honestly, there isn't a card out there at the moment that fills the AGP bandwidth available. It's only obsolete because it's being phased out by manufacturing, not because it's slower. Eventually however, the AGP bus will not be able to handle the GPU bandwidth necessary.

I had planned to upgrade to:
-Asus nForce 590 SLI motherboard
-E6600 Core 2 Duo
-2 GB of RAM (DDR2)
-GeForce 7950 GT x 2
-WD 74 GB 10,000 RPM Raptors

But with what I saw of the Yorkfield Core 2 Quad I want to wait. I was thinking of waiting for:
-Asus nForce 6 motherboard
-Core 2 Quad (Yorkfield)
-2 GB of RAM (DDR3)
-GeForce 8800 GT x 2

That's why I am considering this upgrade.

 Perhaps a shot at the notoriously crappy 6800XT?

Reply to TurdBurglar

Yup. You saw right through me

I believe that my GeForce 6800 GT already beats the 6800 XT.

Reply to Dark_DragoonX

It would not be impossible for smart gfx card builder to use an AGP to PCIe converter chip and make one of these AGP 8xxx models, so don't rule anything out...

Beats? No. Totally kills the leaving hell out of the cripple crap 6800XT? yes.

If there is, it'll be insanely overpriced like the 7800GS+. Also, the Yorkfield is Intel's 8 core processor scheduled for 2008.

I have a feeling there is no chance of that....

If you dont wanna pay the money for a 7800GS (or even +)

Get a X800XTPE off ebay for £90, I had a 6800GT, and I got an extra 2000 3d marks with my new card!)

Plays Company of hereoes absolutely brilliantly, I mean you will never be able to play ridiculous resolutions but it will get you through till next year I reckon (well, i hope cos im not doing a proper upgrade till next year either!)

do you think Nvidia called it the "XT" to subtly associate the letters "XT" (which ati obviously use in their high end cards) with something that was slow?

Stick with your 6800GT, OC it as best you can (Maybe add an after market cooling fan/heat-sink).

While his 3DMark score may increase, real world performance will not increase by much.
He should either:
A) Wait for the new card and Core 2 Quad to be released.
B) Go for a real upgrade; get a Core 2 Duo E6300 and an X1900XT 256MB with a 975X board, and then wait for the G80/R600 and Core 2 Quad.

oh yeah, i do agree, a real upgrade would be much better, but I tell you what, the performance on my games is noticably better with the X800XT, and as you can probably sell the 6800 for about £80 its almost a free upgrade?

Going with watercooling and a higher overclock is a good idea. With just air I have my 6800 GT overclocked to Ultra speeds. I wonder how far I could push it with a nice watercooling setup.

Marketing. Also trying to confuse the honest buyer.

You could be waiting a long time. :P

yeah... im not positive, but i believe ati does the same with their GT labeling (like youre saying nvidia is doing with their XT labeling)... just affixing it to a lower performing card in their line up, at least below their top card anyhow...

i could be wrong... but it appears that way anyhow on part of both companies, just taking shots at each other through marketing.

Reply to choirbass

That's not a very good solution; water cooling isn't going to turn the 6800GT into a stellar performer, and will end up costing him too much for a next to nothing upgrade.

you can spend for a 7600gt. that should hold you over. i doubt theres a chance that there will be g80 agps. only because there might not be enough bandwith in those. dont quote me on that. just a thought.

oh come on now zac we know you cant wait for the 8600xt lol.

edit; im still waiting for flamage from prozac
i know he loves the 68xt.
so much that if he knew where i lived he would bury one
in my head like an axe

Yep probably AGP would kill an 8800 but who knows... I think there's a lot of bandwidth still available on agp 8x too.. my agp 6800ultra actually gets slightly hgher 3dmark than exactly the same card but a pcie version. wierd huh?

That would not be a worthwhile upgrade as the 7600GT tends to perform on par with a 6800Ultra.
