7950GT or 7800GT SLI?

I currently have a evga 7800GT 256MB in my system and planning to upgrade the video card. I'm thinking either get another evga 7800GT 256MB for SLI, or replace it with a 7950GT 512MB. Which route will give me better performance?

System:
AMD X2 4200 (might upgrade to 4800+ soon)
1.5GB DDR RAM (might upgrade to 2GB)
Asus A8N-SLI Premium

The 7950GT is the better card. You should buy the better card if you can afford it. Finding a second 7800GT could be a challenge. Try EBAY for around $175. I would think a single 7950GT would be equal to or possibly slightly better performing in some applications than two 7800GT's in SLI.

The GTO is a underclocked GTX, or a overclocked GT, whichever you prefer. The price is damn good for it too i must say, 269 on tigerdirect. It can overclock to GTX speeds very easily. Either that, or like cleeve said, the x1900xt. Both trade blow for blow after the GTO overclock. Good Luck.

After some research, seems like the 7900 GTO is the way to go. I ordered a evga 7900GTO 512MB. Can't wait to get it!

Pretty much any title supporting SLI will perform better on the 7800GTs. I would recommend he sell his first one and get an X1900XT instead of his first options listed.

I don't play any games, so excuse my ignorance where graphics related to the area are discussed. I enjoy my two SLI setups, the7800GT's being on a widesceen. Dvds are my reference point at this stage of my education. I am still learning all the technical equations. I like the sound of my 1800xt powering up. Like a turbine engine LOL. The 1900xtx would have been the better choice over the 7900gto. Not much out there on the gto. I used the THG VPU charts to compare my 1800xt and my 7800 GT's SLI'd. The two 7800's have a little more umph in most benchmarks. But...yeah the 1900xtx is awesome at this stage I'm sure. he should be happy with the 7900gto. Nice.

But i do believe that the GTO is neither a GTX or a GT as i'm pretty sure i read somewhere it has different (slower) memory modules than the GTX (can't reach as high clock speeds) and different (faster) memory modules than the GT.

I'm probably wrong, but there ya go.
