Problems with microsoft office defaulting

I am unable to keep my default settings with Word 2003 and 2007 (font settings, AutoText etc). If I close out of word and reopen it, all my settings disappear.

I hit Format, Font and I change the font settings and size to what we use in my office, I hit the default button. It lets me know that this change will affect all new documents based on NORMAL template and I hit yes. If I close out and reopen Word, all previously saved defaults are gone. This even happens whenever I save an Auto-text command, I reopen Word and everything I saved disappears. I can't even keep words in a dictionary after spell checking, then saving them. I've been using Word for many many years so I'm well versed with how to use it. Word used to work perfectly on my old computer. I was running Windows XP.

This was happening with 2007 version of Word so I removed it and installed 2003. Same problems with both versions. I'm using Windows 7, 64 bit Professional on this new machine.
