Opinions on Microtek 9800XL Please

Hi all:

I am thinking about upgrading to a larger scanner. This will be used for
scanning original fine art oils, acrylics, watercolours, etc. One on the
short list is a Microtek 9800XL.

I have a few questions for anyone with experience with this scanner:

1: What is your overall opinion of the scanner?

2: Can the lid be removed to create an open flat surface for scanning larger
pieces?

3: How deep is the glass below the top surface of the scanner casing? (When
scanning larger pieces, the height of this lip can cause a lot of distortion
if it is too high)

Any other observations you care to share would be most appreciated.
