Will DDR 400 and DDR 333 work together?

Upgrading my dell dimension 4600, it has 4 slots. Already has 2 x 256mb DDR 333.
Can I add 512mb more of DDR 400? Or should I stick with DDR 333?

Is it better to add 2 x 256mb or 1 x 512mb? (for a total of 1GB)

Thanks.

You can add the 1x512 DDR400 but it will not run dual and the DDR400 will automatically set to that of DDR333 if not then do so for stability. So all the rams should run at DDR333. It will slow it down at bit since it does not run dual anymore but with high application more ram is better. Well just try it and see for yourself.

I'd recommend getting 333 to begin with, because dells tend to have compatibility issues in my experience with some 400mhz models. Haven't looked at prices lately, but I would assume it would also be cheaper as well. Regardless, the speed will be limited to 333 on that machine.

Yeah, it will auto scale down to the slower memory speeds. But if you want memory that you can still use for future upgrades, than might as well get better ones and just recycle it. Otherwise just get DDR333 or whatevers cheaper.
