I want to build my own HTPC and having some trouble determining if the parts that I have are good enough. Please let me know if you think these will be alright or if there is something I should upgrade. My TV is a 30" LG Slim CRT. It is HDTV and supports 1080i. I would like to output the best picture to it that I can, and still be able to read it and surf the web and things on it.

Here are the parts that I have laying around that I can use.

Soyo K7V Dragon Plus
Althlon XP1700+
2x 256MB Crucial PC2100
512MB Kinston PC2100
2x Maxtor 200GB IDE 7200RPM harddrives\
160GB WesternDigital harddrive
80GB Western Digital harddrive
Hauppage PVR-350 with Firefly remote
ATI Radeon 9550 256 MB
DVI to HDMI cable from partsexpress.com

Do you guys think this will be able to put out high enough video to my tv for every day use? Will this perform well enough to be able to record and watch shows on my hdtv ? Thank you for the help

I think that the main thing about getting the best display from a computer on a HDTV is to make sure that your video card is able to display a resolution that is close to the native resolution of your TV. I forget what the actual resolution is for 1080i, but if you look that up, make sure that your video card can support something close to it.

Also, I don't know what software you are planning on using to capture video (MCE, BeyondTV, MythTV, etc) or if you are planning on compressing the files after you have saved them, but i am pretty sure that if you were to try to compress them with your processor, it would take a long time.

I'm planning on using BeyondTV. I have used it briefly before and it looks like it provides a good interface to use. I tried to hook the PC up to the tv briefly during lunch, and it looks like the resolutions aren't quite right. The text is way to small to be usable. I haven't had a chance to look around at cards yet this afternoon. Have any suggestions for an 8x AGP card?

The cable I have to my house is only standard Cox cable, no digital or HD stations at this point. I know I'm not going to be able to change standard signal into a high definition using my PC, just looking to get the best quality out of what I have.

I'm still looking for a case for this stuff. Still have an old beat-up antec case that these parts are stuffed in. Most cases that I have found are for mini-atx or similar size boards. Since this is an ATX board my options are pretty limited. I have to double check my TV stand to see how much clearance I will have, but i imagine the around 6inch height of most cases would do ok.
