Hello,
I have the PC version of NFSU2. I found some specs on the cars, and these
are the fastest on the quarter-mile (with no special tuning, no uniques, and
just all level 3 modifications):
Mazda RX-7: 291.3 ft-lbs, 441.6 bhp, quarter-mile 7.60.
Nissan 240SX: 335.2 ft-lbs, 488.7 bhp, quarter-mile 7.53.

Now, are these the best cars for EVERY race type?
The two with most hp are these 2, even if (maybe because they're quite
heavy) they're not the fastest concerning acceleration:

Mustang GT: 488.1 ft-lbs, 551.7 bhp, quarter-mile 8.16.
Nissan 350Z: 415.7 ft-lbs, 523.9 bhp, quarter-mile 7.86.

I'm still in stage 2 and just have a Miata and a Celica. What car shoud I
buy next?
Ideally, a car which could last as long as possible, with a good handling
and RWD (i prefer it)...

Thanx,

Kamox

The Corolla is the fastest car for circuit, sprint, streetx, and url.
No other car in NFSU2 can corner as fast as the Corolla. On most tracks
the Corolla is 2 to 3 seconds faster per lap than any other car. The
European Corsa is closer, but still 1 to 2 seconds slower per lap
than the Corolla.

Here's a link to a video I made of an online 3 lap race with the
Corolla, (no uniques as this was a ranked race). I probably should
have geared it a bit taller, but won by over 7 seconds against
an elite racer in an RX7.

Though the Corrolla is TECHNICALLY the fastest, it's also the ugliest. I
used a 240sx up to stage 5, when I bought my 350Z...

I put together a list using various resources and specification data from
the game...which shows that the Corolla is joint 6th in the list of fastest
cars (that's with full upgrades).

Faster cars:-
Skyline
Miata
TT
Tiburon V6
Impreza

Cars equal to Corolla:-
EVO
A3

The stock Corolla when compared to other stock cars is 25th in the list of
stock cars...beating only the 3 SUV's and the Ford Focus.

Regardless of NFSU2's flawed specs, NFSU2's flawed physics has given the
Corolla the best cornering speed of all the cars.

Here's a link to a video of a ranked (no unique) Corolla doing a 3:36.75
time in a 3 lap online race at Outer Ring. A few players are well under
3:35 now. The Celica is probably the second fastest car at Outer Ring,
and the best players can barely get it 3:39.xx. At any other track, the
Corolla is 2 to 3 seconds per lap faster than any other NFSU2 car.

The 240sx is the fastest drag car, but I don't know by how much.

In what regard do the flawed physics give the Corolla better cornering?

According to the specs, the Miata has much better handling, and an equal
top speed, coupled with a faster 0-100 speed it would make sense that the
Miata can corner faster regardless of physics.

Besides which the fastest laps I've seen have not used any cornering,
rather the driver just bashes into a wall and gets pointed in the right
direction by the game. I haven't downloaded the wmv...is this the tactic
used?

There being no damage modelling in the game, 'riding the rails' is an
accepted technique. Doubt if any records can be established without
'scratching' the car. Also, in the real world, mounting a curb at full speed
would probably lead to your next ride being in a hearse, or at the very
least next to the driver of a tow truck. :)

At the URL test track, the game shows the Corolla to have about 1.2g's
cornering force on most of the corners (1.3 to 1.4 on the one corner
with a dip and curbs), while the Mustang with "extreme" level parts,
including tires, barely gets .80 g's, less than a stock Mustang with no
upgrades would have. Most cars with "extreme" level parts are going to
get the same 1.2g's of cornering force that the Corolla does in NFSU2,
but in NFSU2, only the Corolla gets that much cornering force.

The specs in NFSU1 and NFSU2 have never matched how the cars do on the
tracks. In NFSU1, the Skyline's specs are the best, but the RX7 is the
fastest car at most tracks.

Not on outer ring, which I why I chose that track, scrape a corner and you
lose speed and don't get any NOS. Download the video.

Better yet, try the cars out yourself. In just a few lap, you can get the
Corolla down to sub 1:10's at the test URL track without using NOS or
wall riding, usually in the 1:06 to 1:08 range. There aren't any other
cars in NFSU2 that can match this.

ATCH!
It's still top three ugliest. Now...an RX8, with a spoiler and airdam "out
of the box" gives a nice even drift, real predictable, quicker to accelerate
than that nasty toyota, and, with a black paint, and oldschool flamejob,
looks WAY better...

Thanks everybody for the answers (esp. Jeff Reid).
I'm now in stage 3 with a Corolla and a TT. The latter is just for fun and
has a limited visual tuning, just to keep it realistic (it's my car in RL
and wanted to see how it would have looked with those BBS rims and some
other touches). Moreover, slamming 350 Kw under the hood of a TT and see the
effects is funny :-))
Here are my 2 cars: http://www.geocities.com/kamox/ida/u2.html
I've to say that the Corolla is amazing... even if the acceleration is not
the best of the group. It has an old-style, "junky/underground" feel that I
like.
I made several tests with an "unlock-all" savegame on various tracks with
different setups and the outcome is always the same: the Corolla corners
like mad and the 240SX is a dragster, very very fast but lacks something on
the dynamic side.
