Master\Slave vs Cable Select

OK, so let me show you how ignorant I am...

Why would I want to connect components using the master\slave approach vs cable select? Does one perform better or are there limitations? I know I have to set the jumpers, I just want to understand why I would go one way or the other.

in some cases, mixing diff manuctures drives especially...

they only work is one is set to CS and one set to slave or master or vice versa..

odd it may seem but there has been times when i had to tinker with CS, master, slave, and even use a different cable to get the drives to work...
