I have Windows Server 2003 running with 2 network cards. One network card connects to the Internet (uses NAT), and the 2nd card is a Dlink gigabit card connected to the rest of my network (which consistes of 3 switches-1 netgear gs108 gigabit switch, 3com 10/100 switch, linksys 4-port wireless router--dchp disabled). The Dlink card is setup as my DCHP server. My question is this, can i install a 3rd network card so i can have my gigabit network separated from slower 10/100 and wireless network. I would like to be able to use dchp accross both network segments, to have all the computers access each other, and to have all computers be able to access the internet.
In order to do what you're inquiring, you would basically unhook your 10/100 switches from the 10/100/1000 switch. The 10/100 hardware would run back to the 10/100 NIC. The 10/100/1000 switch would run into the 10/100/1000 NIC.
But it's really not worth the trouble unless you have heavy congestion on your network caused by 10/100 traffic. Even then, the 10/100/1000 should handle it better and not really disrupt the 1000 traffic.
Basically, yeah you can do it. Do you want to? No.
