Anti-death penalty forces have gained momentum in the past few years, with a moratorium in Illinois, court disputes over lethal injection in more than a half-dozen states and progress toward outright abolishment in New Jersey....
...What gets little notice, however, is a series of academic studies over the last half-dozen years that claim to settle a once hotly debated argument - whether the death penalty acts as a deterrent to murder. The analyses say yes. They count between three and 18 lives that would be saved by the execution of each convicted...
No! I cant be....the threat of punishment prevents crime? No no no.... it'll never work. Just take away any thing that can be used to kill. That'll solve the problem.
Correct, some studies do say that. The Article you referenced also mentions that the data is also interpreted differently by others.

The moral opposition is loud, too, echoed in Europe and the rest of the industrialized world, where all but a few countries banned executions years ago.
Replace industrialized with civilised and that quote puts a completely different slant on things.
The latest study that came out, says that violent crimes are on the increase. Is this hand and hand with the stopping of the Death Penalty? The thought of having to spend the rest of ones life behind bars, being fed and housed at the tax payers expense, does not seem to bother some. Just listen to them whine though, when given the death penalty!! OOH, it is just so cruel to put me to death, for killing and raping a child. Public hangings should be the thought for the day!!!
Is this hand and hand with the stopping of the Death Penalty?
I don't know, is it? Jakes link provided no solid evidence, merely conjecture. Does the increase of violent crimes coincide with anything else? An increase in the last three years coincides with the invasion of Iraq. Is that to blame? An increase in the last six years with the release of Windows XP, surely not even hardcore Bill haters would blame Microsoft.
I'm not saying you are wrong, just I see no hard evidence.
For the record I oppose the death penalty, yet would happily personally beat to death paedophiles. Conflicting I know, but that is the truth of the matter for me.
