Hi All:

I've been looking at film scanners to archive my slide/negative
collection (not vast, but of value to me). I narrowed the choice
of scanner down to the Minolta Scan Elite 5400, or the Nikon
Coolscan LS50.

Ed Hamrick's comments on the advantages of the Nikon changed
my initial inclination for the Minolta (thanks for those, Ed, most
interesting and apposite - better optics, better colour, no light
source warm-up, faster speed particularly when using DICE).

However.

As far as I can see, Nikon have stuffed the LS50 with a single
slide scan adaptor. The Minolta has a 4-slide at a time scan
capability. It seems that in order to go above a single slide at
a time on the Nikon, they want more than double the price
for the basic scanner (LS5000) plus even more for a slide feeder.

This would rule out the Nikon route for me, but I noticed that
the single slide mount, and other film accessories are compatible
between the LS50 and the LS5000.

Does anyone know if the SF210 for the LS5000 is _actually_
compatible with the LS50 scanner? Needless to say, the
marketing fluff at the Nikon site does not suggest this might be
the case, but if not they just lost a sale.

Regards
Ian

You can ask at comp.periphs.scanners, but I'm pretty sure the slide
feeder does NOT work with the V.

The feeder option did not work with the IV or III either, only the 4000
and 2000.

Thanks, Mac. I guess it was a long shot, but as far as I could see all the
extra hardware was in the SF210, it would have been very easy for
them to do that.

They are crazy ! The SF is expensive enough (I have the SF-200 from a
LS-2000, and it's supposed to work wih the 5000), and you'd have to buy a
double priced scanner to use it !

Shame on NIKON !

Has someone been interrested in hacking the firmware :-) ?
