Hi
I use an Ipaq 3970 and have several SD cards, varying from 256Mb to 1Gb. I
can remove and replace them on the PDA without problem but I am having an
issue with using the same cards on PCs via two separate card readers. I find
file transfers direct to the PDA are slow and I would like to use a (USB2)
card reader to speed things up.

Using both XPpro and 98se PCs I am findind that the SD card is recognised as
requiring format. The same thing then happens at the PDA when the SD card
is subsequently returned to it.

Can anyone shed any light on the problem? If I format on the PC what
settings should I use to keep the card PDA friendly ?

For the record two of the cards are Sandisk but I do not believe that brand
is an issue.

Thanks.

Hi,

I can't speak to your formatting problem directly, but I don't belive
you will realize significantly faster transfer speeds if that is your
motivation. The average data transfer rate of which SD flash memory
technology is capable is far below that of USB 2.0 speeds. The limiting
factor on the transfer rate of an SD card connected to the PC through
USB 2.0 is the transfer rate of the SD card itself.

And by similar reasoning ATA 133 and SATA 150 hardware yields little
meaningful transfer performance gain over ATA 100 in your average
desktop pc because the mechanics of the hard drive cannot copy bits to
and from the drive interface to the controller fast enough to saturate
even ATA 100 controller technology. If you want real transfer
performance gain in secondary storage you need to be looking at disk
striping RAID.

Hope that helps,

John

Out of curiosity try using it only in the XP Pro machine and see if
that cures the problem. My gut tells me maybe the 908SE machine is
doing it? I've noticed the CF/SD card readers work better in XP then
they do in 98SE.

Thanks for the info on data transfer John. I'll give up trying for more
speed!!

Sorry Amy, the problem is with both OS's. In fact it showed up with the XP
machine which runs in NTFS and I thought that 98se would make a difference.
It didn't. I think the 98se machine transfers slightly slower than the XP
one but that would be explained by its lower specs.

This is now officially just a quest for knowledge. Practically, I'll stick
to not using an external reader, but I'd like to get to the real reason for
the problem.

Thanks for trying.
