Hey everyone,
I built my first C2D system last night. I used the stock cooling, however, it is hot, IMO. At idle it is 72-75c. I took the heatsink off once, and I think the thermal compound may have got messed up, however, i didnt excpect it to affect temperatures this much. What is causing these high temps?
Read some of the other posts before asking (there are about 10-15 of them)... it will be one of several issues.
1.your thermal paste is now shagged
2.you have not put the heat sink on properly (its not your fault, its tricky and will lead to very high temps)
3.the software is reading the wrong temp, in fact no software reads the right temp, as the right temp is not reported, it just throttles at an appropriate temp, but will not tell you where you are in relation to that temp, this is not a generally a problem however.
4.you have not enabled EIST, and portable/laptop mode, this will drop idle by about 7-9C on an E6600.
The order of likelyhood for these issues are 2, then 3 then 1 then 4 given the temp you are seeing. You will be able to get down to 32-33 on the stock HSF if you work down the list.
Again sorry for being a bit blunt, but there is probably a 'my C2D is too hot!!!' post every other day, your situation is exactly the same as those unless you have tried the above. Some people have failed to seat the HSF >6-7 times, but eventually get it seated. Yes I know that is not very good.
I reinstalled the heatsink and now Im down to 42c at idle, is this a viable temperature?
Thanks for the help!
depends what you use to measure it, TAT/everest CPU=42C is not bad, but i idle at 32-33, and the only special thing about my setup is the P180 case, and that is stock.
Have you done step 4? this would probably bring you down to mid 30's at idle.
Other than that good job, that was a lot quicker and more painless than most of the 'its too hot' threads, will be happy to help again. Most people argue with the solutions you put forward, until eventually then implement and it works, like they are looking for an excuse to RMA or something.
well i had the same problem after i reseatted the heatsink i was getting like 28 at idle.Try mabye applying less or more thermal idk.aBut mostly its the heatsink. And also i have a zalman s9500.
