I consider myself pretty good with tech stuff, im taking the cisco certification through school etc... but i am just out of ideas with this.
Ok, i have a dsl connection and modem with a linksys router. 4 computers on my network. They were all working great, no problems at all. Then one began having problems, it was not able to get to certain web pages (for example i would type gmail.com, and get redirected to a search page). I suspected it was browser hijacking, so I tried to take care of that. It didnt fix it.
So i started to troubleshoot. I tried a new cable, new port on my router, and a new NIC. None of these fixed the problem. Now, for some reason, the computer is not able to get DHCP info from my router ("DHCP server cannot be reached"?, so it is assigning itself a 169.X.X.X IP, which i think is the windows private address. I made sure the router's DHCP server is enabled, it is. I tried manually giving it a static IP, it was not able to ping anything, the router included.
Now the first computer is not the only one affected, another is having the same problem (not getting DHCP info). The other two computers on the network have no problems at all.
When i connect either of the non-working computers directly through the modem, they both work perfectly...
so... im confused and have no idea where to go from here, a new router maybe?
A side problem im having. On the second affected computer i went to network connections and disabled the connection (attempting to refresh it), but now it cannot enable it, "connection failed". And it freezes to the point of me having to end the process when i give it a static IP. Anything i can do about this?
I don't think the router is the problem. Try resetting the router, and/or to factory. I've had them hangup before.
The redirect is a form of hijacking. They rewrite (hard code) where they wany you to go, bypassing the DNS server. Spyware Doctor is one of the best programs for finding these. It is free to use but must buy it for removal/cleaning. It gives you a complete register key location so you can manualy remove with regedit. HiJackthis is another good program.
If you are unable to get connection info (ip, dns, gat) Make sure the Windows firewall or any other, is not blocking the port. I had a friend playing around with the icons in the tray and disabled it, Got clicker happy.
If you are using IE, try Firefox and see if it gets to the proper site.
