Hi there,

I am struggling to understand printer compatibility with SimpleShare NAS product. There is a nice detailed review of SimpleShare network attached storage (NAS) at http://www.tomsnetworking.com/Revi [...] S250-1.php .

That review says “You plug your USB printer into it and all machines on your network can use it for printing as long as they can handle talking to an LPD-based print server.”

What specifically is the compatibility requirement on the printer?
Can you tell me if Brother HL-5150D will work with this STI-NAS250?

My printer details at http://solutions.brother.com/hl5150d_all/en_us/
A related print server product mentions LPD http://solutions.brother.com/nc2100p/
but I was hoping the NAS print server functionality would allow me to avoid purchasing a separate print server.

Any pointers would be much appreciated.

Great question, oemk. Unfortunately, the only way to know whether a particular print server will work with a particular printer it to try it. There are just too many printers out there and manufacturers can't and don't check them all.

That being said, since the printer in question at least references LPD and is a Windows-compatible machine, chances are good that it will probably at least print. What you probably won't get is any info back from the printer, such as paper out, ink low, etc.
