HP Scanjet 7400c - buttons not working

I have been using my HP Scanjet 7400c very successfully with XP Pro - but
for reasons that escape me, _most_ of [but not all] the front panel
quick-launch buttons have stopped working.

Uninstalling and re-installing both the original S/W and the latest download
from HP has made no difference other than to now stop all buttons working!

Has anyone had this experience or any ideas? Failing that - is there a way
to launch the "File" function from the PC?
