What's the best 2d display accelerator for XFree? It's not only pure performance issue but also support from XServers...

the S3 series has the best X Server support, with the most accelerated X servers available. The performance is decent, but for monkeying with *nix, aside from quake, there's not really a need for a kick-butt card.
