Mostly web surfing, eh?

I think most people just don't know, exactly what they want to do with their PC until they do it.

I'd go for the cheapest you can get for just general use, websurfing/email/music/chat.

If you plan or consider other things, take a look at the CPU chart Tom has if certain performance is something your looking for:

Just want the latest & greatest of those 2 choices for those 2 prices, just tired of the Amd Athlon 64 3200 that I have now, craped it out a couple of times in 2 years of use. I just like those 2 rigs.

What do mean by "craped it out a couple of times"? What did you do to it?
What makes you think using a faster system for basic web surfing would make it any more idiot-proof than your current one?

I would say go for the 6300, but at this price, they skimped on everything thats for sure.

Post the full specification,(if they provide them!) and we'll tell you!

You can surf the net fast with a cable modem or DSL connected to an old Pentium III 450MHz PC.

A 450 could not even handle flash video's.... i would go for the c2d 6300.....as it will use the pc 4200 ram better....but the AMD system's tend to come with better onboard video....6150 will at least play last years games.....at med settings but still play them....

Can you list all your parts? case,PSU?(come on sonata II)

Thats kind of insulting, don't you think?
What about if he wants to maybe watch a movie sometime later, or does decide to do more with the PC?

even though any current cpu is overkill for websurfing, it is still wise to buy something that exceeds your current needs... as the OP said, he wants to keep his PC for a few years...

but it's also true that his current A64 3200 is still good enough... so it may be possible, if he had trouble with this CPU, to help him fix that... with the spec of his PC and a description of the problem, it might be solved without even spending one cent. moreover, changing CPU is no use if the problem comes from software, or from another part of the PC

If your looking for a system thats not going to be used for gaming but just every day things like e-mail, websurf, etc. than I would suggest this build:

Intel Pentium D 805 Dual Core 2.66GHz - 89.99
Kingston HyperX 512MB (2 x 256MB) DDR 400 Dual Channel - 64.99
Western Digital Caviar 80GB 7200 RPM SATA 150 - 41.99
MSI MBOX PM8M2-V Intel (LGA775) Intel Pentium 4 Barebones - 74.99
SAMSUNG 18X DVD±R DVD Burner With 12X DVD-RAM - 30.99

Total = 302.95
(Prices compliments of NewEgg)

It sounds like you already have a base system though so you may be able to swap a few parts like Hard drives, CD-ROMs and such and even save some more money. I have built this system many times for clients and they all work great.

For just surfing, you might as well just get the cheaper AMD system.

No matter which you choose, make sure you have a PCIe slot so you can upgrade the graphics later.

How come the 4600 is cheaper but better than the 6300?

hmmm, must have something to do with the integrated graphics.

I guess maybe that was a little harsh.
I've just seen too many people buy an overpriced prebuild to replace an already somewhat recent system, and become disappointed expecting their entire computer experience to change, when all they do is email and internet anyhow.
Often these are the same people who find their computer gets too slow for them no matter what they have, just because of all the adware and other stuff they put on their system.
