i have recently moved and have the following problem:
I have an existing wired setup in the second floor (office) with two PCs, one network printer, one RAID network storage and one laptop replicator all connected to a gigabit switch. This allows all systems in the office to talk to each other at gigabit speeds and usefully share the storage (used for photographic work, etc. this is what drives the gigabit need) and printer. The problem is that the only way to get internet access to the house is via the single comcast cable connection in the first floor living room. wiring from down there to the second floor is not really an option (the house is old and big and rewiring would be a very big project). I tried powerline networking but the electrical system is quite old (except in the office, where it was upgraded to an additional 60Amp line directly from outside) and the speed is very very low and unreliable. So im hoping to be able to get internet access upstairs via connecting a wireless bridge to the existing switch and have the bridge in the second floor[/img] talk to a wireless router attached to a cable modem downstairs.
would this work?
and if it does, will i retain gigabit speed among the systems upstairs (i.e. is it the case the only traffic that would be subject to wireless speed would be internet traffic)?
As ganjha stated, you have the right idea. I would however look at a bigger antennae set for your router and/or bridge depending on how big your place is. You can usually find decent buys on ebay to lessen the cost. And yes, your internal network will stay at 1Gb.
