I was particulary looking at the socket 939 opty 144 and AMD 64 3500+

the opteron is currently 11 dollars cheaper at newegg but which one would be a good preformer in gaming?

not true that you need to get dual core but yes it could be recomended(depending on your requirements).

Though out of the two you said I'd go for the opteron144 it overclocks well (considering you have good motherboard, ram etc)...

Or get a FX-55 with free a Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 ST3250824AS 250GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive for $209...
That makes this $25 cheaper than the other deal, if you need a 250GB drive too.

RichPLS, how do you come up with $25 less?

1. FX-55 Promo #1 - $139 and HDD - $75 -- Total is $214

2. FX-55 Promo #2 - $209 with free HDD

This is only a 5 dollar difference. With the first promo, you need a heatsink/fan. Is this where the difference is coming from? What heatsink/fan did you pick?

Though, personally, I'd just get the $139 FX-55 with the Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 250GB Perpendicular Drive for 5 bucks more, here.
