John,

I know there are converters out there but I'm not sure about any that are
free. You may want to post in the microsoft.public.pocketpc.multimedia
group and see if someone there has an answer for you as well as monitoring
this group.

Regards,

Thanks Clinton, I'll also post my question in the multimedia newsgroup.

Yes, wmv but not mpeg.
If you are using XP you can use Windows Media Encoder.
You may say that it doesn't support rm source. Yes, you are right. But I
simply select 'All files' it just works fine.

If you ask me how I can only tell you what I've done :-)
I have installed The Core Player and RealVideo Alternative (both are free)
before, and have removed RealVideo Alternative. Now I just can't tell
which program brought the Codec and made this possible. You can try that
out and please also let me know. If it doesn't work for you then I need to
find out the actual reason. I've installed all different stuff in my
frustration :-)

Btw, the conversion time is even much shorter than the video length,
unlike some RM converters I found on net. They act just like video
recorder.

Good luck

Hi Phuoc,

I am using Windows XP Home Edition so I just downloaded Windows Media
Encoder from Microsoft's website.

I then tried to open a RealPlayer file (rm file) using the included Windows
Media File Editor and selecting 'All files', but then I got an error
message saying "it is not possible to open the file.....that the file type
may not be supported or may be digitally protected."

I'd suspect real alternative supplies a codec that can be used by
DirectShow as a registered codec. It probably left it behind rather
than uninstalling it. In turn WME can use compatible registered
codecs.

That's an interesting result - I found the same when loading an MPEG
codec, that I could now encode DATs from video CD even though it
wasn't a recognised 'file type'.

Cheers - Neil

Try it with Real Alternative:
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Real_Alternative.ht...
I'm not sure what made it possible.
Please let me know your results.

Good luck

Hi again Phuoc,

Thanks for your help.

I just downloaded Real Player for Pocket PC. I didn't realize it was
available for free with FREE being the key word here.

Now I am watching my Real Player Video of John McLaughlin playing
"Cherokee" on my Pocket PC. If you want to see this terrific video, you
can download it from:
http://www.angelfire.com/jazz/jm3/med.html

Video quality is no too great, but the guitar playing is heavenly.

Unfortunately, it was the RealPlayer for PPC made me frustrated. It can
only play very few RM-files. All the clips I got from TV station websites
couldn't run while they are all fine on my desktop. Currently, I think I
only found 3 RM-clips from net which can run on my PPC.

I have also tried to find help from this group and got to know that it's
not my PPC or installation. It's simply the PPC RealPlayer. It only
supports few RM-formats.

So, keep this discussion in mind. You may have to come back when you find
something unsupported :-)
