I just bought a new computer and went to update my XP. The first thing it
tried to do was download Windows Publisher. That seemed odd because it
didn't tell me what it was. MS usually tells you what it is downloading.

What is it, and is it okay to download?

Microsoft Publisher is commercial software for sale, and is not
legally available for software anywhere.

It is *not* OK to download.

Hi

Where was Publisher trying to be downloaded from - via Windows Update? If
so, I would imagine that you have it installed on your PC. Have you looked
for it in Start>Programs?

No, not Microsoft Publisher, Microsoft Windows Publisher.
I don't want to download it, Microsoft is telling me to download it to get
updates on XP. But they don't say what it is.

Hi

Have a look at the following - about half way down the page:

"How to Use Windows Update"
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/security/expert/russel_installsp2.mspx

It is part of the new Windows Update mechanism.
