Fujitsu claims to hold the title of the world's first vendor to offer a 200 GB mobile hard drive, but how does its performance stack up against the competition?

I'm sorry... but what is up with that autor's opinion? It uses less electricity with the slower rotation speed? Really?

I mean, first... you didn't include this hard drive in your maximum power usage graphs for the 7200 rpm drives yet. That said, how much is a 1.8 wat difference worth? How much will it really extend the life of a notebook?

I find the results of the maximum power consumption graph interesting though... what was used to determine that? Was the exact same notebook used for all drives?

I just seem to remember an article on tomshardware or anandtech where they were comparing 4200, 5400, and 7600 rpm drives, and found almost no difference in power consumption. The conclusion was that there was no reason for 4200 or 5400 rpm drives at all. Can't seem to find the link though...

Though it is new, I want to see mobile SAS technologies. As a matter of fact I want to see SAS as a standard choice for desktops and not just servers.

Hello Windaria,

Thanks for the comment...the first paragraph of the Author's opinion was basically a recap of the product and its capabilities...followed by my personal comments!

Cheers,

Sina

Hmm...Well if you look at it 2.2W/4.6W = 0.46 => 46% meaning that the power usage of the Fujitsu is 46% of that of the Hitatchi...

Now: 4.6W - 2.2W = 2.4W being the difference in power usage

2.4W/2.2W = 1.1 => 110% meaning that the difference between the power usage of the two drives is 110% of the power usage of the 200 GB Fujitsu (which we are comparing against).

I was going to mention exactly this - it's been around for several weeks now, so I cannot say Fujitsu is the "first" to have 200GB.

I have a beef with notebook drive manufacturers because they are just too slow to improve the speed and capacity of notebook drives. 100GB 7200RPM was nice news 18 months ago, but it's time to move on!!! You don't buy a desktop today with only 100GB, and many newer notebooks from Toshiba and HP now come with two drives to increase capacity.

I want to see some 160GB and 200GB drives at 7200RPM. GIVE ME WHAT I NEED TO UPGRADE!!!

Will they make a standard ATA-133 version? This would be perfect for throwing a gigantic drive in an ancient laptop that can take a physically larger drive. Like my old Thinkpad 600x -- it could fit two of these internally for a total of 400gb!

Totally agreed, but I wouldn't expect that too soon. It's all marketing - and 90% of laptop buyers don't even look at the drive RPM (..as long as the CPU has a trillion GHz).
