Greetings,
I have a couple of things I'd like to get some expert advice on:
Factoring out cost implications, is it better to have one higher wattage power supply or two lesser ones from a heat and noise perspective? I've been doing some minor upgrading to my PC of late and want to start placing more emphasis on heat and noise management. My most recent purchases have been an XFX 7950 GX2 video card and a new Silverstone Temjin TJ07 full tower case.
My previous case was a mid tower Lian-li. I found with it that I was running quite hot and ended up cutting a hole in the side of the case and mounting an additional 120mm fan aligned with the CPU heat sink. That seemed to help. At the time I was running two 6800GTs in SLI.
So for a number of reasons I bought this new case, in part because I wanted more room to creatively bundle and route my cables and wires, better air flow and eliminating the worry I have about the PC case sitting on the floor with an open fan spinning on the case where my 8 month old son may crawl up and stick his fingers in it. My 2 year old daughter already did that once. It scared her more than hurt her, I think.
The Silverstone case seemed to have the best air flow design and heat management that I saw in my research. So tonight I begin swapping over all my components. Currently I have an Antec Neopower 480 watt power supply. Thinking down the road at future upgrades and the probable need for a more robust power supply, I was curious if one bigger supply was better than two smaller ones. The SS case has plenty of room for a second power supply so that could be an option. I've noticed there are also smaller video card power supplies you can get that fit into a drive bay. Possibly an alternate solution?
Anyways, sorry for the long-winded post. Any advice, or suggestions that you think may be helpful in my plight are greatly appreciated. My setup is listed below:
AMD Athlon 64 4000+
Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe
OCZ Gold Series 2GB DDR 400 Dual Channel RAM
XFX 7950 GX2 Video Card
Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS Gamer
Antec Neopower 480w Power Supply
Two WD 10k RPM Raptor Hard Drives (RAID 0)
Silverstone Temjin TJ07 Case
