http://www.megagames.com/news/html [...] pecs.shtml Im glad this puts rumors to rest about "you need to have a 1kw power supply to run one card" ...anyway...it says its the only directx10 compliant card before 2007, understood..however my question is..will this work with windows xp...and..ALLS I WANT TO FRIGGIN DO IS RUN OBLIVION OVER 50fps in outside environments!! and this better do it. Anyone have ideas or opinions on how you think this card will run oblivion? thanks, sorry if this is a repost in advance.

Should run Oblivion fine.

so will it work with windows xp? just in direct x 9 ofcourse?

Power consumption isn't as bad as I thought.

The company has also issued recommended power ratings for these new beasts as they will feature two PCI-Express slots in order to receive the juice they require to run; a 450W power supply will be the minimum requirement for a GF 8800 GTX and a 400W for a GF 8800 GTS. If you have more money than sense and decide to run two of these babies in an SLI setup you will need a minimum 800W power supply.

It'll be cool when www.xbitlabs.com runs some test to measure actual power consumption when idle and under load. Of course I won't be buying a DX10 GPU anytime soon since I bought my X1900XT 512MB for $320 not too long ago.

Yeah 128 Pixel Pipelines!!! That would be one pretty gaming experience. Still the most important thing is not released. The price and that odd 768Mb memory.

I wouldn´t be surprised if they mixed up the info. I mean, they say the X1900XT got 48 Pipelines. That´s not correct. So, maybe the G80 has "only" 128 Shaders...

I can't wait to see how this baby performs. :D

It's not time for me to upgrade yet, but I sure am tempted.
A lot of people seams to be saying that they don't want to buy first generation hardware. I for one would rather buy this than the last of the old generation.

Yeah, can't wait for some real pw consumption numbers. I'm betting nVidia is being generous for SLI and 800W is only for the GTX (just like they did with the 7800/7900's). At least that's what I'm hoping since I just bought a GameXstream 700W and plan on going 8800 GTS SLI...

Stoopid question...

When DX10 comes out... can u install that on XP?
If u use a DX10 card with DX9... will this severly limit the card?

Silly i know, but what im trying to figure out is:
With emerging rumours that Vista is killing game FPS... will a DX10 card give better game results on XP than Vista???

If true, id buy a dx10 card and leave vista

I reard there won't be an DX10 version for WinXP, but rather a DX9 update, without many (read main) DX10 features. :(

I have a feeling they are counting ALUs, not pipelines, and I also think that they might be counting the Full + Mini ALUs. Which would indicate 32 full pipelines by the current GF7x design.

128 full pipelines with any recent design would require much more transistors than they're allowing for right now, whereas 128 ALUs seems about right for the original predicted design.

That sounds about right but even with shaders that would require about 2x5 times the current transistor count of the G71 without adding additional features. even 128 shader seems on the high side without a change to some other major components.

The X1900 also has 96 ALUs so 128 Pixel ALUs makes even more sense when looking at all the aspects.

Could the prices of nVIDIA's DX10 cards actually rise in 2007 compared to November and December of this year similarly to how prices of DDR2 RAM rose in September compared to July and August? There could be much more demand for these cards in 2007 when Vista and DX10 games arrive.

Will it be possible to enable both AA and HDR simultaneously on a Geforce 8800 GTS in Oblivion?

The RV580 has roughly 400 Mill. Transistors. 48 Pixel and 8 Vertex Shader. Even if i add them up (not quite the best solution, but okay to keep it simple), i get 56 Shaders. They claim that the G80 has more than twice of that. I´m not sure if Nvidia simplified the Shader design - if that´s even possible. I doubt it though. If anything the Shaders got more complex since they switched to Version 4 and need Geometry Shaders and what not.
So you´re probably right.

What i don´t really get is the memory size. I somewhat doubt that they cut back from 1024 to save money. It probably has something to do with that funky bus width of 384. But i´m really curious about it. Usually sizes grow exponential 2^x.

But it´s a mood point since most of the things that could be said know would be speculation. I´m quite curious though. :D

yes its been announced that full AA and HDR can be run at the same time on oblivion, which is why im excited. I just want to see oblivion run smooth as silk in outside environments.

Reply to LordBelial

Wow AA and HDR at the same time, finally Nvidia gives it's loyal supporters what they wanted. I'm using the HDR hack for the Oblivion right now in order for my 7800GTX to render it. And now finally we can enjoy full visual rendering and performance on Nvidia cards. :)

WOW well its going to be a monster and lets hope now GF FX screw ups to repeat themselfs... but still wow. what i dontget is
why 320/384bit and also why 768mb/640mb memory why such strange well numbers ?

DX10 cards will be backwards-compatible with DX9 games, just as DX10 games will be backwards-compatible with DX9 (and maybe even DX8 ) hardware.

This has been posted last week by Daily Tech http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=4441

And the 8800 GTX hasn't 128 pipelines...it has 128 unified shaders.

Also the 384-bit memory interface and the 768 MB are due to:

12 x 32 bit = 384 bit
12 x 64 MB = 768 MB

So you'll get 12 64 MB modules with a 32 bit interface each conected to the memory controller of the board. :D

Power on this baby is about 225 W (expect second generation of high end dx10 cards to get as high as 300 W)

Its still the power supply issue I'm worried about. Companies are going around marketing Physics cards and AI chips now... how much more power can my computer suck up...

I can see me running my computer 24/7 for a month

Knock on the Door: It's the police. Open up!
Cops: Where is the marijuana? I see an energy spike in your household
Me: Uh... thats my computer...
Cops: Yeah, yeah, tell it to the judge.

From what i've been reading, the reason why they went with 384-bit instead of 512-bit was there was some sort of technical issue with the actual manufacturing process, but you can expect that to change when they go to a smaller form (like 65 nm). Also, seems that the G80 will be 80 nm :)

Don't worry, turn off the a/c during summer and the heating in winter (the computer can make up for the last one). ;)

PS - You can always exchange the washing machine for a usb powered one too... lol

I tell you guys,

I have a power meter on my computer, and my rig, e6600, 2 gigs ddr2, 2 320+ hds, 2 dvds, floppy, x1900xtx, sound card, 4 case fans, etc, pulled around 190 watts.

With the 7900 GTO now, I am hitting around 170~175W TOTAL.

I do not understand these folks who need 700 watts!

Even the new 8800 says no more than 500 for SLI!

Nice cards, I hope they will release the Go versions quickly so that the price of the 7-series (nVidias 7-series *lolz*) drops.

384-bit memory interface isnt really that much. A Matrox card once (few years back) had a 512-bit interface IIRC.
